Inner Sense

"The landscape. What appears solid and unchanging is in reality a story of movement and evolution. Nothing remains constant. This planet and all upon it is in a state of continuous transition, both seasonally and over the eons of time. By looking at the present we are also subconsciously reading the story of a past almost as long as the history of the earth. This body of work studies the elements at play that have formed the Inner Sense of the landscape as we know it.

"Created by unimaginable forces that lie within the earth itself much of what we see today - both the landform itself and the carpet of vegetation that lies above - is the result of the ongoing actions and presence of water (or lack of it) in its various forms. Rain. Ice. Rivers. Waves. As such it provides the core underlying theme throughout the body of work. Every mountain and glen. Every tree and root. The rivers and the coast. All owe their beauty to its seasonal weathering and life bringing touch. It's moods and cycles. From the skies above to the hills and glens and on to the seas and oceans and back again. Uisge Beatha – indeed it is the Water of Life...

"Texture, light, weather, season and movement are the building blocks for the images. But it is my own mood and feelings at the time that underwrite the overall expression that forms the final composition. Images may take many days over several visits to create as I immerse myself in the location and try to understand its character. I draw inspiration from a wide range of genius’ - Jan Tove, the venerable Christopher Burkett, the very great Michael Fatali and our own Joe Cornish to name but a few. I often return to images these and other masters have created, together with works artists including Turner, Dali, Monet and Rothko. Each could truly see the light."

"I used digital techniques exclusively for the first time on the 4 year "Inner Sense" project which has allowed me to completely rethink my approach and technique. This has been immensely exciting and resulted in many shots I do not think I would otherwise have captured. All of the effects you see in my work are created on location rather than on the computer, where I use only the most standard of functions."

"I'm working towards making my the production of my work as environmentally responsible as possible. To see more details click here."
